What can I do to get a better night's sleep?

This is a question I get asked a lot. With the current climate our stress levels are all on high alert and this can have an impact on the quality of sleep we are having. The odd night of no sleep is fine but when it becomes a habit this is where problems may start to arise.

 

What is causing you not to sleep?

A couple of things you might want to have a look at that might be causing lack of sleep?

  • Switch off all electronics in the bedroom from the wall.

  • Using your phone for the alarm? Place it just outside the bedroom door so you will still hear it.

  • Don’t check the time when you get up in the middle of the night. Know if your alarm hasn’t

    gone off it’s not time to get up yet.

  • Try and do some self-care before bedtime.  Have a bath, listen to relaxing music, read a book,

    talk to a loved one or a friend.

  • Try and go to bed and get up the same time every day.

  • Don’t have the room too hot or too cold.

  • Don’t exercise to near bedtime.

  • Eat if possible a few hours prior to going to bed.

  • Regular massage to help the mind and body unwind.

 

Once you have checked all the above and if you are still having difficulty in getting to or staying asleep here are a few of my favourite dōTERRA Essential Oils to support your body in preparing for a better night’s rest. When we are getting enough sleep, this supports a reduction in stress. improves digestion and so much more.

  Essential Oils to reduce stress for a better night sleep.

 Lavender Essential Oil: Known for its calming properties. Diffuse throughout the day for a relaxing atmosphere. Apply a drop under the tongue to relax the mind and the body. Diffuse with Balance essential oil prior to go to bed.

 Frankincense Essential Oil: The king of Oils place 2 drops under the tongue daily to ease feelings of anxiousness. Apply 2 drops at the hairline at the nape of the neck.  Diffuse at bedtime with lavender to prepare the body for relaxation and support rest.

 Vetiver Essential Oil:  This is a very woody sent with its chemical compounds known for grounding and supporting sleep. It is very thick so good to diffuse with other oils.

 Balance Essential Oil: My favourite! this pre-blended oil has been designed to reduce anxious feelings and plants your feet firmly to the ground. Think of a tree being planted, this is what I imagine when I inhale Balance essential oil. Amazing in the diffuse at night with Wild Orange, Cedarwood. You can apply over the heart, soles of the feet and behind the ears.

 Copaiba Essential Oil: This oil has been used for centuries and can help soothe anxious feelings, supports the cardiovascular, nervous, digestive, immune, and respiratory systems.  This all-rounder essential oil is great for when it comes to reducing stress in your life and preparing for a good night’s rest. When we are stressed all the above body systems don’t work properly so can contribute to a sleepless night.  

 Serenity Essential Oil: Specifically designed with a blend of oils to promote relaxation and prepare the body and mind for sleep. Drop 1-2 drops on the soles of your feet, wrists and heart, inhale from cupped hands for 30-40 seconds or use a diffuser before bedtime.

 Serenity Capsules: Add Serenity capsules to Serenity oil which has been designed with people who don’t like the taste of lavender but want the benefits of the oil internally.  Studies have shown when lavender is ingested it has a positive impact of the mind and body supporting calmness and relaxation.  Take 1-2 Serenity capsules 30 minutes before going to bed.

 Wild Orange Essential Oil:  This beautiful essential oil is a contraction in its name with its uplifting aroma for a midday slump, too supporting when you are feeling sad to uplifting the mood.  Wild Orange is great for cleansing the house and when taken internally it can support the immune and digestive systems. Wild Orange helps calm the mind prior to bed or when stressful situations arise.

 Cedarwood Essential Oil: another Woody grounding oil, great to pair with Balance and vetiver, Frankincense, Wild Orange for a good night rest.

 Adaptiv Essential Oil: Made with you in mind. When life takes over and you are feeling overwhelmed, this oil has the ability to ease, nervous, anxious, tense, frustrated, or overwhelmed feelings and allow you to adapt to the situation you find yourself in. Adaptiv can make the process a little easier to do.
